How to choose an icon font
An icon font is an ordinary font file whose characters are pictures: one file gives a whole set of icons that you place like letters, and whose colour, size and shadow follow the text styles. Fonts like this suit buttons, menus and toolbars, where an icon should keep the size and colour of the text next to it.
Look at the number of icons and at the style: outline, solid and rounded sets look different beside your text, so keep to one set per project. Open a font to browse its icons, and click an icon to copy its character. Icon fonts are not for words: their characters are not letters, so typed text will not show in them.
