EOT and OTF
EOT was made by Microsoft for embedding fonts in web pages, and only Internet Explorer reads it. Today it matters only for very old browsers.
OTF (OpenType) usually carries PostScript (CFF) outlines and many typographic features: ligatures, alternates, small capitals. Professional design tools prefer it.
Both are wrappers around the same font, so nothing is lost: every glyph, kerning pair and OpenType feature stays as it is.
Why convert EOT to OTF
OTF suits professional design and print work where PostScript outlines and OpenType features matter.
Questions and answers
- Are my fonts safe?
- Your file travels over an encrypted connection, is converted on our server and deleted 24 hours after the conversion (the original at once). We do not look at it, share it or add it to the catalogue.
- Is the converter free?
- Yes, free and without registration. To keep it fast for everyone there are limits: 10 files at a time, 25 MB each, and a number of conversions an hour.
- Does converting change the font?
- Between TTF, OTF, WOFF, WOFF2 and EOT the font is only repacked: nothing is lost. Changing TrueType outlines to PostScript or back draws the curves again (the shapes stay, hinting may change). Formats such as Type 1 and SVG cannot hold OpenType features, and we say so.
- May I convert any font?
- Only fonts you have the right to use that way. A licence for a desktop font often does not cover websites, and the other way round. The fonts of our catalogue are free to use.
