How to install a font for Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign

Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign use the fonts installed in your operating system, so installing a font once makes it available in all three programs.

Steps

  1. First install the font in your operating system (see the Windows or macOS installation guide).
  2. Close the Adobe program completely and open it again: Photoshop must be restarted to see new fonts.
  3. Choose the Type tool, click the font list in the options bar or in the Character panel and type the first letters of the font name.
  4. Each style (Regular, Bold, Italic and so on) is listed separately under the family name; a variable font also gives you sliders (axes) in the Properties or Character panel.
  5. If a PSD, AI or INDD file opens with a missing fonts warning, install the font it names and open the file again.
  6. For text that must keep working on other computers, in Illustrator or InDesign choose Type, Create Outlines to turn the text into shapes, or package the file together with its fonts.Text turned into outlines can no longer be edited as text.

Tips

  • Adobe Fonts (Creative Cloud) is a separate subscription library: fonts from other sites are installed in the system and are not synced.
  • If Cyrillic or Kazakh letters look wrong, check that the font really contains those letters before installing it.

Questions

Why does the font not appear in Photoshop?

Photoshop reads the list of fonts when it starts, so close it completely and open it again. Also check that the font is installed in the system.

Do I need Adobe Fonts for a font from another site?

No: a font from another site is installed in the system and works in Adobe programs without any syncing.

Does it work for Cyrillic or Kazakh letters?

Only if the font contains those letters. The font page in the catalogue shows which languages the font supports.
