How to install a font on Windows 10 and 11

A font downloaded from the web usually comes as a ZIP archive. Installing it on Windows takes less than a minute, and afterwards it works in every program on the computer.

Steps

  1. Unzip the downloaded archive: right-click the ZIP file and choose Extract All.
  2. Open the folder and find the files that end in .ttf or .otf.The license and readme text files are not needed for the installation.
  3. Right-click a font file and choose Install.Install for all users makes the font available to every account, but it needs administrator rights. In Windows 11 the item may be under Show more options.
  4. To install several styles at once, select all the font files, right-click them and choose Install.
  5. Alternatively, open Start, then Settings, Personalization, Fonts, and drag the font files into the dashed "Drag and drop to install" area.
  6. Restart the program you want to use the font in, such as Word or Photoshop, so that it picks up the new font.

Tips

  • If the font is not offered in a program, restart that program.
  • Do not install the .otf and .ttf versions of the same font together: this creates duplicates and conflicts.
  • To remove a font, open Settings, Personalization, Fonts, pick the font and choose Uninstall.

Questions

Do I need administrator rights?

Not for a regular installation: the font is installed for your own account. Only the Install for all users option needs administrator rights.

Why does the font not appear in my program?

Most programs read the list of fonts only when they start, so close the program completely and open it again. If it is still missing, check that you installed a .ttf or .otf file and not the license text.

Does it work for Cyrillic or Kazakh letters?

Only if the font contains those letters. The font page in the catalogue shows which languages the font supports.
